Nutrition Assessment Laboratory

The Division of HNF has a Human Nutrition and Health Assessment Laboratory which is used for both research and teaching purposes.   This is a space in Knapp Hall which was renovated in 2003.  It has 2802 sq. ft. and houses a full-size Prodigy Pro dual-energy X-ray (DXA) apparatus (GE Medical Systems, Madison, WI), a metabolic cart, heel scanner for assessing bone density, and a macular pigment densitometer.   The Human Nutrition Science Laboratory was built to complement the Human Nutrition and Health Assessment Laboratory and equipment includes a -80º freezer, a refrigerator/freezer, water deionizer, bench top autoclave, a ‘Stomacher’ mixer, gel electrophoresis equipment, a pH meter, a spectrophotometer, an ELISA reader and washer, a thermocycler, a real time PCR instrument, and other miscellaneous laboratory supplies.

 

The laboratory houses three computers which are equipped with the software for statistical analysis of data and for determining nutrient content of diet records/recalls.

 

HUEC Computer Lab
The HUEC Computer Lab is equipped with twenty computer workstations. The lab is also equipped with multimedia capabilities to assist with the instruction of various software packages. The software installed on the computers ranges from nutritional and diet analysis software such as Computrition, Nutritionist Pro, and Food Processor, to statistical software packages including SAS and SPSS. The lab is open to all Human Ecology students.
